Être conjugation: the French verb to be in every tense

The most irregular verb in French, laid out tense by tense.

Être conjugation is the first thing every French learner needs, and the most irregular: je suis, j'étais, je serai, que je sois. The verb changes its stem almost every time it changes tense.

This page gives you every common tense of être in tables, the forms that trip learners up, and how être works as an auxiliary.

1. Être in the present tense, the imparfait and the future

The three most frequent tenses, side by side:

SubjectPresentImparfaitFuture
jesuisétaisserai
tuesétaisseras
il, elle, onestétaitsera
noussommesétionsserons
vousêtesétiezserez
ils, ellessontétaientseront

Before a vowel, je becomes j': j'étais. The present has a circumflex only in vous êtes.

2. Être in the imparfait and the future

Être is the one verb whose imparfait does not come from the nous form of the present: its stem is ét-, with the usual endings. The guide to the French imparfait explains the endings every other verb uses.

The future and the conditional share the stem ser-: je serai is the future, je serais the conditional. The two sound almost the same, so the context decides.

3. Être in the passé composé: j'ai été

In the passé composé, être takes avoir as its auxiliary: j'ai été, tu as été, il a été, nous avons été, vous avez été, ils ont été. The participle été never changes.

Je suis été does not exist. It is the most common mistake with this verb, because être is the auxiliary of so many other verbs.

4. Être in the conditional and the subjunctive

SubjectConditionalSubjunctive
jeseraisque je sois
tuseraisque tu sois
il, elle, onseraitqu'il soit
nousserionsque nous soyons
vousseriezque vous soyez
ils, ellesseraientqu'ils soient

The subjunctive appears after expressions such as il faut que and bien que: il faut que tu sois là. The page on subjunctive or indicative shows when it is needed. The imperative borrows the same forms: sois, soyons, soyez.

5. Être as an auxiliary

Être also builds the passé composé of other verbs: verbs of movement and change of state (aller, venir, partir, naître, mourir) and every pronominal verb: elle est partie, nous nous sommes levés.

With être as the auxiliary, the past participle agrees with the subject: elles sont arrivées. The page on past participle agreement with être covers the cases.

6. Other forms and everyday expressions

The passé simple, used in books, is je fus, il fut, nous fûmes, ils furent. The present participle is étant, the past participle été.

7. Common mistakes with être

The short version

Je suis, j'étais, je serai, j'ai été, je serais, que je sois. Être has a different stem in almost every tense, takes avoir in the passé composé, and serves as the auxiliary of many other verbs.
